Purpose:The purpose of this study was to explore the characteristics of nursing staffing system which were affecting nursing outcomes in abdominal surgery patients and the GS nursing units.

methods:The subjects were 126 abdominal surgery patients from 3 GS nursing units of 3 general hospitals where the abdominal surgery patients were admitted. The instruments to measure the characteristics of nursing staffing systems, NOC nursing outcomes of the patients, patients¡¯ acuity and characteristics were used for the data collection. Data were collected using review of patients¡¯ records, observation of patients, interviews with patients for patients¡¯ data and nursing staffing data and interviews with head nurses for data of nursing staffing systems by one rater. Data were collected from Sep. 6th, 2004 to Dec. 24th, 2004.

Results:Although the nursing staffing level was low, the scores of the nursing outcomes in the GS nursing unit of secondary hospital whose patients acuity scores were markedly lower than those of the tertiary hospitals were higher than the GS nursing units of the tertiary hospitals. The scores of the nursing outcomes in the GS nursing unit, whose level of nursing staffing, RN-nurse aids ratio were higher and had GS nurse specialists were higher than another units in the tertiary hospitals.

Conclusion:The nursing outcomes can be higher when the characteristics of nursing staffing system are fit to the characteristics of the patients and nursing units.
